

The most interesting part was that Sauron (who was the worst Dark Lord in LOTR) "divined something indomitable in ," according to Christopher Tolkien's Unfinished Tales. Even still, Gollum only revealed limited information: "Shire" and "Baggins." As proof, when Pippin peered into the palantír in The Two Towers, he described Sauron's laughter as "like being stabbed with knives." Gollum had been in Sauron's physical presence, which would have been even worse. Instead, Sauron likely tortured Gollum mentally and psychologically. Thus, Sauron could have killed Gollum with absolutely no trouble, and because of that, it doesn't seem like Gollum's torture was primarily physical. Sauron burned and killed the great Elf Gil-galad with his bare hands, so the Dark Lord was deadly beyond imagination.
